I saw this one broadcast on one of the obscure movie channels. Given that it was on such a station, in the absence of any reference to other Macross stuff, I figured that it was pretty much a stand-alone movie. I was wrong. If I hadn't seen any Robotech, I would have been completely lost.
Even so, it was bad. There was the whole reporting ethics thing, very heavy-handed. I almost immediately found all the characters annoying except one... who died shortly. There was no way of knowing why the "Minmei defense" was ever thought of (a holographic and music show, in space, during a battle... to confuse and demoralize the enemy). There was no way of knowing who the Zentradi were, etc. Many characters made appearances irrelevant to the movie... my guess is that they were in a series, and were just there to satisfy some fans. Some of the main characters did have potential, and some of the enemies had the beginning of a cool side... but it wasn't followed through.
All in all, it was very unsatisfying. Perhaps it could be a pleasant way to revisit some characters if it capped off a series, but alone, it's one to avoid.
