I'm writing this on August 31, 1998. Last viewing: about 2 months ago.
An assuredly fun ride. A thoroughly evil nearly indestructable thing goes on a rampage, the hero acts quite cool and is exceedingly cute, remarkably unique technology is used to maximum effectiveness. A few plot twists are thrown in for good measure.
I was quite tempted to put this much higher, but maybe that's because I had been relatively starved for anime before watching this. The several holes in the plot, combined with a less than stunning ending (though still reasonably satisfactory) keep this series below many others. I loved the animation style, though. All too often, I thought that a shot was just screaming to be made into a screenshot, or used as a cel to sell. I was quite surprised later on, when I scanned the cel web pages, that I found so few that were nealy as cool as what I remembered watching. That perhaps also had an effect on the number.
I guess a final thing affecting its number is that I actually wrote this review after giving it a number on the "comparisons" page. There, I tried to decide how much I liked it relative to some others. I think I liked it just a bit more than Ruin Explorers, and I certainly liked it less than Eskaflowne... but everything in between is a toss up right now. The only things that seem to have a solid rating are those which I've seen repeatedly, or which have been burned into my mind. I expect that later repeat viewings will solidify this whole scale, but for now, this is what I've got.
