    Big robots, big guns

I'm writing this on July 5, 1998. Last viewing: at least 1 year ago

A rather typical space series, with the big ships, big guns, and lots of big robot suits. But the fact that they actually bothered to try to deal with relativity was appealing, as were the utterly silly "classes" at the end of a couple episodes, about the science used in the show.

It's the first anime I taped from another person's tape, and when watching it for the second time, I wondered why. Since then, I'd seen some things with notably better animation, a more gripping plot, and more fleshed out characters. It was certainly a fun ride, but not really a favorite anymore. I guess part of the appeal was that I had guessed almost dead-on what the black hole bomb was. Meaning that, while it was predictable, it did have enough internal consistancy that you could make that call. Also, it was complete (though the last episode was black and white, just a step above production sketches), and there were many other series which I just couldn't see all of since no one in town had all the tapes (3x3 eyes being the longest and most eagerly awaited).

The technology and the timeline were cool. The characters were good enough. Just ignore the "Gunbuster Cloak" and this can be a fun ride.

    Boom.
