SCarab's Anime Sketches 3

This third page is devoted to a set of drawings made much later in my learning process for drawing anime. I may as well mention here that I improved my drawing style greatly while watching Kimagure Orange Road. For the last ten or so episodes, since I thought I might not see any of the episodes ever again, I paused the videotape when I saw particularly interesting faces. I sketched these quickly onto normal tablet paper, then watched more. Soon, I was able to draw that style very quickly and rather well. I plan soon for some of those sketches to appear on a page nearby, when I decide to give some hints for what worked for me.

These are images of Misato, from Neon Genesis Evangelion. At the time of drawing, I had recently acquired a graphics tablet and had learned enough about photoshop to believe I could do something nice enough to submit to the MAC site. I was quite happy with the results (though again, in some ways I like the pencil sketch better; in other ways, I prefer the colored version).

This picture was the first in the progress of working toward a sketch for the MAC. I had thought that an image of Misato in her "work" mode, looking disapprovingly at a drunk version of herself, would make for a good picture. A backdrop of the NERV logo was also part of the plan, since I could scan it in from the back of an Evangelion manga I have.

The first picture, of the "respectable" Misato, was done using Photoshop with a scanned pencil sketch. I simply increased the Brightness/Contrast before coloring to give blacker lines. After completing the figure, I decided to give it a background, and I was quite pleased with how it turned out.

Then, I worked on the other Misato picture. In this case, since the pencil sketch was much rougher than the other, I decided to trace over the lines in a new layer using the paintbrush tool, to give nice, clean lines. Again, I decided to give it a background. I'm a bit happier with the face, hair, and shading than the picture above, but the pose I was trying for was rather complicated and somehow doesn't look quite right.

Finally, I put the two together, scaling them appropriately, and added the NERV background. I was rather pleased with the results.
